Your Pool Deck Can be Cooler !

Cooler Kool Decks

We all know that the summer heat can be unbearable, and the concrete gets so hot you can’t walk on it.  In fact, before I jump out of a pool, I grab my flip-flops.   The Phoenix/Tucson summer sun will heat up any concrete surface, but a spray knockdown texture overlay in a light color will lower your concrete temperature significantly. Besides color, (beige’s and light grays are suggested) texture can also result in cooler surfaces, experts report. This is because textured concrete allows for increased airflow and can create small shadows that are cool. Also, heat bounces off irregular surfaces in greater amounts than it does off smooth ones. And if a barefoot person walks on an irregular surface, air pockets will prevent his or her feet from touching the surface completely. You can see why texture is a great choice for a pool deck. It is also is a beautiful surface for walkways, patios, and driveways.   It may be applied to new or old concrete.

Texturing is a five-step process.

Step One is GET THE CONCRETE  PREPPED RIGHT!!! The pores of the concrete must be opened so the material has something to grab to. Imagine sticking something to glass vs. sandpaper. This is also true for decorative overlays.

Step Two includes apply a bonding coat to the clean and prepped concrete.

Step Three is applying a scratch coat over the entire concrete surface.

Step Four is spraying the material through a hopper gun and then troweling it to a flat surface.

Step Five is apply the deck paint color to the acrylic Cool deck texture .

Here is some great news. There is a new product that we can use for step five.  Although a bit more expensive than the standard acrylic paints, this new paint will lower your deck temperatures 7 to 10 degrees.  This may not sound like much, but it makes all the difference in the world. This new product comes in the standard acrylic colors. After installing it at my home (I needed to see how it worked) I was extremely pleased.  Not only did it lower the temperature of the deck, it was still environmentally safe, withstood wear and tear and was not slippery. Another terrific feature of acrylic coatings is the easy maintenance. They are stain resistant and clean up is a snap. They scrub up with mild soap and water, keeping the surface looking great.  Give us a call for more information about reducing the heat on your pool or patio cool deck!
